News:

The U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics reported the Consumer Price Index for All Urban Consumers increased 0.7 percent in April, before seasonal adjustment. The April level of 194.6 was 3.5 percent higher than in April 2004.

In the week ending May 21, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial claims was 323,000, an increase of 1,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 322,000. The 4-week moving average was 330,500, an increase of 500 from the previous week's revised average of 330,000.

Let’s look a moment beyond statistics. While more people are finding employment, more employed workers are discontent and experiencing frustration. A number of factors may be involved, but in most cases it can be boiled down to three things: feeling undervalued, unappreciated and powerless.

Unfortunately, I don’t see any of this changing anytime soon. Until a transformation occurs in the way employers view (and respect) their employees, you will probably have to contend with this type of treatment. This is a prevailing reason many people decide to go into business for themselves. Despite the problems inherent in such a transition, being able to express your creativity to the fullest and having complete control of your destiny is a substantially more rewarding scenario.

WORK FROM HOME BUSINESSES:

A VIABLE OPTION?

by David Richter

You have been searching for your next job or new career.  You rewrote your resume, created a cover letter, posted both on job sites, attended a couple of career fairs, contacted some recruiters, and sent your information in response to some ads you saw in the classifieds.  You’ve started networking.  You also went on some first interviews, none of which developed into anything further.

You have been searching for roughly two months, and as you take stock of your situation, you realize that you are no further ahead than when you began your search.  You have come to a defining point in your job search process.

This may be the perfect time to consider taking your talents and channeling them in a completely new direction.  If you are ready for a meaningful change, starting your own home-based business may be the answer.  The rewards could be better than you've ever experienced before in your working life.

Work from home businesses these days usually means an online business.  You use your computer to make a living.  In most cases, that means you need to sell something.  But what if you’re not a salesperson?  What if you’ve never sold a thing in your life?

You don’t have to be a salesperson to sell online.  In fact, most people starting an online business have never sold anything previously.  You begin by looking at the knowledge you possess in a particular area.  It could be anything you learned extensively that you now can teach or help others to understand.  Anything can be sold online.

It can be software such as a how-to CD or book you write, or a service helping others write code.  It can be a book on quilting.  It can be information about truck parts.  It can even be someone else's product that you sell, for which you receive a commission.  The possibilities are endless.

You’ll need a website to promote your products, and there’s a lot of assistance you can get online to help create one.  The bottom line is, the initial expense to get your online business up and running is very small.  It may take a few months to organize your business into a profit-making machine, but the revenue potential is huge.

You’ll have to give up rush-hour traffic.  You may not be wearing business attire as much.  You won’t be having those spell-binding meetings you are accustomed to.  The only office politics you may have is when your spouse comes home from his/her job at the end of the day.  Is a work at home business a viable option?  Absolutely.

Tip of the Week:

When you find yourself in turmoil because nothing seems to be going your way, it may be an opportunity to alter your perspective. Could it be that everything that is happening is right - right for you in the very moment it is occurring? You will probably find that life always hands you an event as a mechanism for learning about yourself, a lesson you will be able to profit from later on. Seen from that perspective, everything that occurs in life happens for a reason, and is good.

Mailbag: Questions from our Readers

Sophy writes: "How long will it take you to help me get a good job? I need one desperately!"

Sophy: Let me answer this in a couple of ways. First, the time to placement is a bigger function of commitment and intention than the specifics of the type of job you are seeking. Keep your focus on your career objective and seeing you achieve it. Then doing the other stuff (resume preparation, contacting recruiters, going on interviews and accepting offers) will fall into place. Second, make sure you keep desperation (or any other type of emotion) out of the equation. The best way to succeed is to keep your head clear and your heart determined. Finally, one of the first things you can do for yourself in this extremely competitive job market is to create a powerful, attention-grabbing resume. Glance over at the side panel under Book of the Month. Success Stories:

Ted writes: "I was having a frustrating time getting in to meet with recruiters. They just wouldn't give me the time of day. I then remembered what you said in your Recruiters book about using leveraging to gain a recruiter's interest. It worked! I was able to meet with three recruiters so far and I have two interviews lined up."
