Unemployment in the US continues to decrease. According to the US Department of Labor, the advance figure for seasonally adjusted initial unemployment claims was 303,000 in the week ending July 16, a decrease of 34,000 from the previous week's revised figure of 337,000. The 4-week moving average was 318,000, a decrease of 3,250 from the previous week's revised average of 321,250. The advance number for seasonally adjusted insured unemployment during the week ending July 9 was 2,577,000, a decrease of 41,000 from the preceding week's revised level of 2,618,000. The 4-week moving average was 2,591,000, a decrease of 4,750 from the preceding week's revised average of 2,595,750. The House of Representatives passed legislation today to improve access to quality health benefits for millions of American workers and their families. Making health care more affordable for workers has been an important issue. The House-passed bill gives workers more health coverage choices through Association Health Plans (AHPs). The way this works is that small businesses would be allowed to join together to purchase health benefits through trade and professional organizations, thus pooling together to gain the negotiating leverage currently enjoyed by big businesses and labor unions. AHPs level the playing field for small business workers and their families, who comprise the majority of the uninsured. If you live in the US, you know how hot it's been lately. This extended heat wave has taken its toll in a number of places including, but certainly not limited to, employees in the workplace. With air conditioning straining to keep up with scorching temperatures, workers are finding little relief wearing business attire in 80-degree office environments. A resulting trend seen across the nation is employees "dressing down" to gain some needed comfort. Workers in many places are coming into the office wearing sandals and casual shirts or tops. You've got to deal with the heat; just make sure your office policy or dress code allows for this. Many companies frown on casual dress; if yours does, gain their approval before you jeopardize your employment. Bottom line: stay cool and stay employed.
Should You Seek Temporary or Contractual Employment While Job Searching? by David Richter According to US Department of Labor statistics, the average time to find employment is roughly six months. It could take as little as four to six weeks, or as long as ten to twelve months, or longer. Several factors determine your time to placement:
No one knows how long they will be unemployed. Even a person with sufficient funds to last their entire period of unemployment may still want to consider a temporary or contractual assignment as an interim solution. The loss in income can have an unforeseeable psychological impact. Other concerns that need to be addressed include:
The rule of thumb is: if you have been searching unsuccessfully for two months and find yourself no further ahead than when you became unemployed, I would encourage you to seek temporary employment or a contractual assignment. More and more people are engaging in this type of activity, including former CEO's. In fact, there has been a twenty percent increase in the number of people working part-time since 2001. The steady rise in temporary employment and contractual assignments is a definite indicator, not only of the state of our economy, but of things to come. Employers are realizing the many benefits of hiring temporary and contract employees. They don’t have to go through all the screening and interviewing that is typical for permanent employees; they don’t have to pay benefits; they can try out a person without any obligation to hire if it isn’t working out; and they can convert a temporary or contractual employee to permanent status once the person has proven themselves. At this time, there is a coupling of two factors: employers are seeking more people for temporary and contract jobs that used to be strictly for permanent employees, and job seekers are taking longer to find permanent employment. I have a Bachelor's degree in Agriculture with a major in Crop Science, and a Master's degree in Wood Technology. The positions could be from teaching to industrial work." Yahaya: Depending on where you live, openings in Agricultural teaching positions or in an Agricultural industry could be few or many. The real issues are: what is it you truly want to do with your degrees - in other words, what is your passion - and how do you present your passion on your resume and in interviews. Then it's simply a matter of focusing into a particular aspect of your field of interest, write a resume that reflects that, and begin investigating locations where those types of jobs can be found. The best way to know where specific jobs are located is to go online and visit the different job or career sites available. By typing in specific job and location keywords at these sites, you will discover where your dream job exists. Good luck to you; let me know how you progress.
